The replacement of the European Construction Products Directive by the European Building Products Regulation in 2013 [1] has put more pressure on the manufacturers and users of flooring materials to concern themselves with the aspects of durability characteristics as slip resistance and cleaning. Experts as well as testing institutes are increasingly commissioned to evaluate the durability of slip resistance and cleaning behaviour as well as the actual soiling properties of tile surfaces during use. This paper addresses the background, the current status and the potential of new practice-based measurement and evaluation methods for slip resistance as well as the cleaning behaviour of tile surfaces and their durability based on surface topography measurements.
